Over the next two years, Tanzania is poised to explore a first-of-its-kind data-driven venture through a strategic collaboration between its Immunization and Vaccines Development (IVD) Program and our dynamic team at Afya Intelligence. This collaborative initiative aims to leverage advanced predictive analytics, marking a significant improvement in current data use practices.

As the world continues to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of efficient and accurate quantification of healthcare commodities cannot be overstated. In Tanzania, a country with a population of over 60 million, ensuring adequate supply of essential medicines, vaccines, and other healthcare commodities is critical in meeting the health needs of the population. However, with limited resources and infrastructure, quantification can be a daunting task.

COVID-19 vaccines have proven to be the safest intervention in protecting the population against SAR-CoV2 infections, hospitalization, severe diseases, and death. However, as of 31st March 2022, only 10.6% of Tanzania's eligible population (adults aged 18 years and above) was fully vaccinated. This proportion was far less than the WHO global targets on COVID-19 vaccination

In the past 3 years , the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the critical importance of resilient and agile supply chains in healthcare. According to a survey by the Healthcare Supply Chain Association, 95% of hospitals experienced supply chain disruptions during the pandemic, with 67% reporting shortages of critical items such as personal protective equipment (PPE) (HSCA, 2021)

Afya Intelligence is excited to announce its collaboration with Insupply Health and the Ministry of Health in Tanzania to develop Tabiri, AI predictive models for healthcare commodities quantification. This project can now start after completing a comprehensive review of existing methods like bottom-up quantification (BUQ) and the identification of several challenges that could be addressed by AI.

On 21st December 2021, just six months after obtaining our legal business registration, Afya Intelligence was announced as the winner of the AMUA 3.0 Acceleration Hackathon, #Innovate4SRHData, under the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Sahara Ventures. This hackathon aimed to address the data challenges in sexual reproductive health and build capacity among innovators and entrepreneurs to co-design sustainable solutions that address the data gaps in this sector. We were among several teams that focused their ideas on leveraging data and existing systems to enable healthcare providers to make more informed decisions when it comes to providing better sexual reproductive healthcare(SRH) services.
